RED-S Prevention & Female Athlete Health
Ashley Schoborg, MA, BCS
Women's Health Behavior Specialist, Exercise Physiologist, and Metabolic Nutrition Consultant
With a master's degree in Exercise Physiology and 21 years of professional experience in exercise science, women's health, health behavior, and nutrition, I bring an integrated perspective to female athlete health and RED-S prevention.
My work combines an understanding of female physiology and metabolism with the behavioral factors that influence an athlete's relationship with food, exercise, her body, and her sport.
I offer two ways to support athletic departments in promoting female athlete health, performance, and long-term well-being.
1. Educational Presentation Series
Stronger From the Inside Out
Understanding Your Body, Fueling Your Performance, and Protecting Your Health
A three-part educational series designed to help female athletes better understand their bodies, recognize the importance of adequate fueling, and develop a healthier relationship with food, exercise, and performance.
The Series Includes:
Part 1: Energy In, Performance Out
The science of fueling, energy availability, health, and athletic performance.
Part 2: The Menstrual Cycle
Understanding what the menstrual cycle can tell you about your health, hormonal function, and energy availability.
Part 3: The Hidden Side of Performance
Exploring how perfectionism, body image, and relationships with food and exercise can influence health and performance.
The series combines exercise science, female physiology, nutrition education, and health behavior to help athletes understand the connections between fueling, health, and performance.
2. Individual Athlete Health & Behavioral Support
Individualized health and behavioral support for moderate- and high-risk RED-S athletes, with collaborative care coordination to promote a connected, cohesive approach to athlete care.
As a Behavioral Support Partner, I bring a complementary perspective to the athletic healthcare team, helping athletes explore the factors that influence their relationship with food, exercise, their bodies, and their sport.
My approach looks beyond eating and exercise behaviors alone, considering how female physiology, metabolism, perfectionism, performance pressures, and body image can interact to influence an athlete's health and everyday decisions.
I provide general nutrition education, reinforce foundational fueling principles, and help athletes translate their care team's recommendations into realistic approaches to everyday life.
Individual support is tailored to the athlete's needs and delivered in collaboration with appropriate healthcare professionals.
About My Approach
I believe supporting female athletes requires an understanding of both the physiological and behavioral factors that influence health and performance.
By bringing together exercise science, female physiology, nutrition education, and health behavior, I help athletes better understand their bodies, recognize patterns that may work against their health, and make more informed choices that support their long-term well-being and athletic performance.
My work complements the expertise of athletic trainers, sports medicine professionals, Registered Dietitians, and mental health providers. I do not provide medical diagnoses, psychotherapy, individualized medical nutrition therapy, or medical return-to-play decisions.
